Ukulele Accessories: Bags and Cases

While the ukulele may have had a rather toy-like image when it was first introduced to the world outside of Hawaii, it is now recognized as a legitimate instrument. Many of the top-end models require as much of the luthiers who make them as does any guitar or other stringed instrument. For that reason, as well as simple reasons of one being attached to the instrument through which they express themselves, ukuleles deserve the same amount of protection afforded larger instruments. The two most common case options are gig bags and hard cases, each possessed of its own advantages.

A gig bag is a soft, usually nylon, case with padding and pockets sewn to the outside to provide storage for other accessories. These cases provide decent protection against shock and protect the finish from scratches and dings. Their soft materials, however, provide next to no protection against catastrophic damage such as is caused by falls or rough handling. They also allow the environment to freely-penetrate the case, providing no protection against humidity or dryness. They are convenient for quick trips—hence the term “gig bag”—but not for long-term storage or extensive travel.

The hard shell case is the standby means of protection for any serious instrument. They are typically heavy, unwieldy and awkward to carry but protect the instrument from just about any damage that may come along. They also provide excellent protection from the elements. Accessories such as humidifiers can be added to them to keep the wood protected from the sort of damage that occurs with rapid climatic changes. While these cases are not the most convenient, they are the most protective. These are suitable for long-term storage, travel of any kind and for instances where the instrument is checked as luggage.
