James Hill: Get to Know One of the Best Ukulele Players in the World

James Hill is among the best-known serious ukulele players in the world. What sets him apart from most of his peers is that he’s not from Hawaii. In fact, he’s from about as far away from a tropical Pacific island as one could hope to get: Nova Scotia, Canada. Ironically, it is largely because of where he’s from that he became a famous ukulele player. Canada uses the ukulele as a way to teach elementary school children the basics of music, much in the fashion that recorders are used in the US. Hill’s love of the instrument started in those early years of his life.

James Hill is one of the ukulele performers who actively seeks to redefine the ukulele as a serious instrument and who, at the same time, doesn’t mind referencing that fact for a bit of humor. Among his recordings, for example, is 2002’s “Playing it like it isn’t…”. Hill has collaborated with numerous other musicians, including cellists and other performers. In addition to being introduced to the instrument in elementary school, Hill was able to participate in a ukulele performance group from a young age, thus cementing his playing it as a serious instrument, ensemble or solo.

James Hill has toured extensively, throughout the United States and Canada. Of course, he’s also played a lot in Hawaii, and is respected among other accomplished and serious ukulele players. His music is largely original, having influences that span a wide range of musical genres. Hill includes among his influences everything from folk to classical. His composition skills have won him wide acclaim, both for their contributing to the body of serious music for the instrument and on their musical merit, itself. He has been called a virtuoso performer and is considered among the best currently performing.

James Hill is active in promoting his instrument, making recommendations to beginners about what types of instruments may suit their needs and other tips. He offers private lessons, but those hoping to learn to play the ukulele on a beautiful beach should be aware that he still lives in his native Nova Scotia. As one develops skill, one will also develop characteristic elements of their playing style that will make certain brands of strings more preferable than others. Some of the best ukulele strings on the market use precious metals in their manufacture, Koolau Golds Ukulele strings, for instance, formerly used a gold alloy in the winding on the lowest string. The company has since switched to a silver alloy. These metals impart a certain sound to the string that some players find desirable. The metal of which a string is made affects its softness, as well. For example, a gold-alloy wound string will generally fret with less finger force than will a similar string that is wound with plain steel. For acoustic instruments, this is an important factor.

For those who are just getting started, there is oftentimes a compromise made on the quality of the instrument to get a better price; a sensible move for a beginner. The best ukulele strings are designed to hold their tuning and to give an even sound at any fret. Martin strings and Koolau strings are both available in nylon, and this provides a good bit of instruction in how much difference a string makes. In the past, strings were made of gut, in the sense that they were literally made of the intestinal linings of animals. Some performers still use these strings as they swear by their sound. Ultimately, the best ukulele strings will be those that give the sound preferred by the performer. They also must be suitable for the instrument. Remember to specify which ukulele voice oneâ??s instrument covers when buying strings. Baritone strings, for instance, could snap the neck on a smaller instrument, due to the tension they require to be tuned. Too thin of a string will become spaghetti-like at lower tunings. How to chose the best finish for your new ukulele

Finishes for Ukuleles — There are numerous ways to finish ukuleles, guitars, and stringed musical instruments. There are musicians who claim bold claims that one way is better than another in the way the instruments sound. There are conflicting opinions on which finish is best for your musical instrument. This article tries to explain  about the basic differences and let you make a better decision as to which ukulele finish you prefer.

Modern High Gloss Finishes — Modern gloss lacquer finish have a beautiful, high sheen, mirror glow that which greatly enhances the color and grain patterns of the woods. And these finishes are tough also. The labor required for application and buffing of the gloss finish is more expensive than satin finishes because of the polishing required to produce the gloss. We think we see a trend in more or our customers preferring the gloss finish. Both gloss and matte lacquer finishes produce excellent tone and volume in the ukulele.

Satin or Matte Finishes — Satin finish has a soft, matte appearance that some customers prefer for a more ‘natural’ look. This is a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. As the satin finish can be easier to apply, it is more often seen with the lower priced instruments. Most of the vintage ukuleles from years gone by had a satin finish…. simply because the modern high-gloss lacquer type finishes were not invented yet.

Varnishes — French polishing is a method of applying finish to wood by hand with a cotton pad.  Many violins are finished with French polishing.  In the stringed instrument world the term ‘French polish’ is understood to be a shellac spirit varnish that has been applied by the French polishing method. Most of the fine old musical instruments made in Europe were French polished, as are a majority of fine classical guitars being hand made today. It is a most highly-prized and desired finish for both its visual and tone enhancing characteristics. The luster, texture and color of the wood are all noticeably enhanced under an expertly applied French polish finish. The cured shellac film is also very thin and flexible and is believed to produce the clearest and most natural sound from the vibrating wood of the ukulele especially the soundboard. Achieving a professional quality French Polish finish is highly dependent on the practiced skill and experience of the finisher. Multiple polishing sessions are required over many days or weeks to achieve the best results. Only a few custom builders offer French Polish finishes on ukuleles due to the labor required.

So what? What kind of finish do I want on my ukulele? — All finishes used in the manufacture of ukuleles can produce excellent tone and volume in the ukulele. Although there are those that do not agree with my opinion, In a darkened room… with a professional player at the other end… I can not detect the tonal difference in finishes.

The bottom line is select the instrument that pleases you in appearance of the wood and the feel of the instrument as you play it and don’t worry much about the finishing.  Some of the fine vintage instruments have such a fine “feel” about them that you just like to be in the same room with them.

Remember, all finishes need respect and care… they all can be scratched and dinged-up. Rough picks and sharp fingernails can do a lot of damage to your ukulele. Every good uke deserves a polish cloth to help care for the finish.  One word of caution, do not use any polish on your ukulele that has silicone in it. The makes any latter refinishing or touching up the finish very difficult.

Holding a Ukulele: the Best Way to Do it

Holding the ukulele is something that most players never give a second thought to (they just hold it in whatever way comes natural). However, holding the ukulele correctly is vital for your playing. Holding it in the wrong way could mean it slipping and ruining your performance. Imagine standing in front of a room full of people, playing a song and having it slip out of your hands. That’s the sort of embarrassment that your certainly want to avoid.

Less dramatically, how you hold the ukulele will influence the sound that the ukulele makes. If you want to get a good tone out of your ukulele, it is vital that you get into good habits in how you hold your uke.

Furthermore, holding your ukulele in the wrong way will restrict your movement. You want to make sure that the way you hold your ukulele does not unnecessarily restrict what you are able to play.

Hold Your Ukulele Loosely

The ukulele is a very small instrument. Because of this, it is very easy for the sound it makes to be strangled if you hold it too tightly. You can test this for yourself. Stand close to a wall (facing it), hold your uke as tightly as possible against your body and strum it. Then move it away from your body completely so it’s just being held by your fretting hand. Strum it. Compare the sounds and you’ll be able to hear what a difference this makes.

Holding a Ukulele When You Are Sitting

Watch the all time great players such as Roy Smeck and Jake Shimabukuro and take note of how they hold the ukulele. They tend to hold it diagonally so that only a small portion of the ukulele is touching their body. They also rest it gently on their thigh to make sure it doesn’t slip (rather than holding it with their arm).

Holding a Ukulele When You Are Standing

This is a much trickier proposition. When you stand up, you have to compromise a little more on sound by holding it tighter to ensure it doesn’t slip. You should have the back end of the ukulele between the inside of your forearm and your body. From there it should be angled away from you so that you can see some of the back of the ukulele when you look down. This means it can vibrate freely resulting in a louder sound.
