What should I look for when buying a ukulele?

Hello; I’ve decided that an amusing hobby to take up would be to learn the ukulele. I’m fairly serious about this, though, and want a decent instrument. So, what sort of price range would be normal for a ukulele, and what else should I look for when buying one? Is ebay or amazon okay, or would it be much better to search in local stores?

Important things to consider are similar to when buying any stringed instrument. Check that the neck isn’t bowed or warped (basically, if it doesn’t look straight, it won’t sound good), the body is free from dents and scratches, the nut is straight, the keys are firmly attached and in working order. I got mine from a local shop for £40.00, and it’s serving me well. I’d recommend trying a local store just because you might hold it and discover you really hate the idea of the wee thing.
Ukulele’s a lot of fun and easy to pick up once you’ve got the hang of it, hope you have a blast!
