Is the ukulele an easy instrument to learn? I know it’ll take some patience and attention- but I really want to learn to play it.
Any tips or pointers?

As string instruments go, the ukulele is relatively easy to start playing (and, like anything worth doing, will require the rest of your life to to well). The nice thing about the ukulele is that you can start with a very inexpensive instrument to see if it suits you before committing yourself to a nicer one. If you just want to investigate by doing, you can get a uke that functions well enough for under $50.
extremely easy

you want to get a good ukulele for about £30, and that should include a hard case, mahalo does a good one.
an ukulele has four strings, and is tuned to gCEA, playing all the strings open makes a Am7 chord.
heres a couple of chords to start you off.
C F Am G
A--3---0----0---2----
E--0---1----0---3----
C--0---0----0---2----
G--0---2----2---0----

a good song to learn to begin with is "5 Years Time" by Noah and the Whale: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8YCSJpF4…
the chords for this are: C, F, G, F, and that is repeated throughout the song.
