    Coolkid,
You aren’t alone. Lot’s of people have trouble keeping rhythm. I’m self taught also and had a real problem strumming. Especially 3/4, considered a waltz beat. Like you find in the song Clementine.
Practice is what it takes. And when you’ve got it…practice some more. It’s easy to learn the chords but putting the chords, words, strumming pattern is work. Practice on songs you’re familiar with. Like nursery rhymes.
Another good help is Ralph Shaw. I have three of his DVD’s and he is really good at teaching. http://www.ralphshaw.ca/ You can’t go wrong.
Don’t get discouraged. Keep at it. It’ll come.
    Have fun,

Maybe it’s time to find a good music teacher to help you. Good luck.
