No one needs capos to play together with that combination of instruments. Everyone can play the same chords, but the ukulele uses different fingerings than guitars.

The best selection of ukuleles around is on eBay. Look for the trusted sellers such as ukulele4u and musicguymic:

http://ukulele.me/recommends/MGM

A good, inexpensive beginners ukulele is the Makala:

http://ukulele.me/recommends/Makala

Or, if you can afford a little more, the Lanikai LU-21:

A Mahalo brand ukulele won't give you sticker shock, and many folks have had good experiences with this starter uke.

You could also check on: Oscar Schmidt, Kala, Lanikai, and Makala brands.

Get a soprano or concert size. Not a tenor or baritone.

Upgrade the strings to Aquila brand strings.

I don't play the ukulele, but I found a chord chart online, so hopefully that helps clear the confusion from your book. Here's the link: http://nfo.net/usa/uke2.html

Here is another chord chart that shows which fingers to use, as well as some alternative choices for playing certain chords. This one has alternative to both the D & D7 chords you are having trouble with, perhaps this chart might benefit you the most: http://www.kiwiukulele.co.nz/Kiwi-Ukulele-Chord-Chart.pdf

Good luck!

First, say the magic words, "Ooka wakka tiki, c'mon I wanna laya, mahalo ukulele." That'll get you in the right frame of mind.

The real trick is mastering your chord changes and strumming so that it's done as effortlessly and without thought as possible. Once you find that you can move around and even occasionally speak, then you can start trying to sing along.

It's hard to be able to sing and play at once. It's especially hard if you're singing or playing something complicated. It takes excellent timing and a ton of practice.

Practice, practice, practice the ukulele part until you can play it without thinking about it. Then you can focus most of your attention on your singing and still keep the uke part going correctly.

I like a Tenor size ukulele. I found the neck of the soprano a little too small. The slightly larger neck of the tenor makes it easier for me to get my fingers to fit. (Try out the fingering of a D chord on any ukeulele you look at.) I own a Kala, and I like it a lot! ($100--$200) Oscar Schmidt has a reputation for making respectable entry level instruments,(around $100 )

Get your hands on as many ukes as you can, and try them out!!! It is always better to try out the instrument you are buying in person... but if no one in your area has a lot of ukes for you to look at, you can always buy online. Two trustworthy online retailers are (and I am sure there are more that I don't know about) http://www.elderly.com/ and http://www.musicguymics.com/. They both have these things in common.....1) You can call and talk to a live person and ask questions. 2) They will "set up" your instrument well and ship it carefully. 3) Good return policy.

Good Luck and Have Fun!!!

You don't really have to read music to play the uke. Just learn the chords. Any ukulele book will show you how to form the chords on the lowest two or three frets, using easy-to-follow diagrams. Each chord will have a name and once you learn the chord names and diagrams you can follow the chords indicated over most popular sheet music. Just strum to keep time with the music!

My friend taught himself how to play the guitar first, and said that it really helped him to eventually learn the ukulele. Also, reading music isn't as difficult as it looks and besides, most people just learn to play by ear. You'll do fine :)

On your own, it may be a little more difficult. If you're dedicated to it and a fast learner, it may be a little easier. If you can find a website that actually explains it well enough, you may be ok. Or pick up some books. Youtube has everyyyything. You may give it a try. Hah. I took band while I was in school. I started in the sixth grade and it took me a couple months to learn how to read it with no problems. Good luck! Ukulele would be awesome. Hah. I haven't played an instrument in forever.

There are 5 sizes, the soprano smallest, concert a little bigger, tenor bigger than the concert, banjo uke all of these are played with the GCEA tuning. Baritone uke is the biggest uke and is the first four strings of the guitar, DGBE. I have been teaching uke and guitar at Bellarmine Universtiy for the last 8 years. I wanted my students to have the best sounding uke at the most affordable price. I now endorsee Lanikai Ukuleles. They are the best sounding ukes with or without electric pickups at reasonable prices. Go to www.lanikaiukes.com to download my FREE uke booklets. Check out the ukes too. Contact Roy T. Cone www.ukuleleworld.com mention MaryLou Stout Dempler, Kentucky's Ukulele Goddess sent you. He will answer all your uke questions.
Vaultergirl2009,

Sopranos are the original size ukuleles, but most people like concerts and tenors b/c they have a better tone. I advise most people to get either a concert or a tenor for this reason. A lot of professional musicians play a tenor b/c of tone.
Check out the Lanikai LU-21C or 21T. Both are really good ukulels at a great price. Read the reviews and you'll see.

Most ukes that are sold are sopranos but you may prefer the deeper tone of a tenor or baritone. Check out Elderly's selection:

Coolkid,
You aren't alone. Lot's of people have trouble keeping rhythm. I'm self taught also and had a real problem strumming. Especially 3/4, considered a waltz beat. Like you find in the song Clementine.
Practice is what it takes. And when you've got it...practice some more. It's easy to learn the chords but putting the chords, words, strumming pattern is work. Practice on songs you're familiar with. Like nursery rhymes.
Another good help is Ralph Shaw. I have three of his DVD's and he is really good at teaching. http://www.ralphshaw.ca/ You can't go wrong.
Don't get discouraged. Keep at it. It'll come.
Have fun,

DANCEstephDANCE,
Yes, you can change the strings to nylon. I've done it on a couple tenors I have and a couple baritones. I used Aquila Nylgut with no metal wound strings and I don't get any buzzing.
Have fun,

Stick to the steel strings. Nylon strings have less tension and will buzz on the fretboard. However, a set of nylon strings is cheap enough, if you want to try it. Good luck either way. Ric

Victor,
A lot of people started on a ukulele and switched to guitar. You can learn chording, struming, picking, etc.
I played the guitar in my younger years and started playing the ukulele about four years ago. I like the ukulele more. It doesn't have the range a guitar has but I play rock, country, blues, jazz, etc. And, it's a lot easier b/c it has only four strings. And if you want more range you can switch the G string for a low G.
Here's some sites for lessons,

Dude... this is the sort of thing you don't ask other people. Which do you want to play the most? Why do you want to play? Do you already have a ukulele you can try or would you have to go out and buy one? Would the cost of a ukulele make much of difference to you? You can learn to "sound good" on the ukulele much, much faster than on the guitar, but it's inherently more limited. Then again, I've seen some crazy ukulele players...

If you like your Indie music with a little ukelele (and who doesn't?) then you will love this tongue-in-cheek contribution from Dent May. Slightly wry and sometimes a bit more over-the-top in his lounge cat delivery, he never disappoints his fans. A good buy and a great choice to slip in on a party track compilation but don't expect anyone to dance to it. ('Cause you can't force a dance party!)

As a ukelele fan, I came across this, but it is much more than ukelele. A Morrissey, Beach Boys, sound. Every song is good, some funny, some heartbreaking.

James,
Piece of cake. You already know how to strum and finger placement. Now you're going to switch to only four strings.
Check out http://www.kunisan.jp/ukulele/eindex.html for chords.
http://www.doctoruke.com/ for simple lessons and songs.
Both sites have tuning.
http://ukulelehunt.com/ has anything you want to know about the ukulele and links to sites to help you.
Another piece of advice. Get either a concert or tenor ukulele. They're bigger than the standard size and will be easier for you to chord b/c, since you play guitar, your accustomed to begger frets like on a guitar.
Have fun,

It doesn't matter.

I started with ukulele then switched to guitar, and now play both. Ukulele is easier but that's because of the size. The two instruments are different once you get past how they look.

Bob Brozman is one of the most astounding players of pre-1940 stringed instruments and styles alive today. I concede that this is a bold statement but feel certain anyone that has seen Bob play will attest. His prowess on guitar with pre-war jazz and blues is legendary and deservedly so. Bob has long been fascinated with traditional Hawaiian music (he is a walking encyclopedia) and demonstrates his mastery of ukulele on this DVD tutorial. It is not for beginners but if you've been playing a while and want to push your chops over the top this DVD is for you.
<br />
<br />Possibly because he uses National ukuleles (both vintage and the excellent National Resophonic recreations), Bob uses a D tuning which is a full step above the standard CGEA tuning favored by most players. You will need to tune your uke up to D to play along with Bob and the extra stretch on the strings may make it difficult to stay in tune if you drop back down to C tuning. But if you are like many uke players I encounter it's probably time to replace your strings anyway. (Hint: you can buy them on Amazon.com for about $3.00.) Also, if you play a larger, concert size ukulele, you might try using a capo. (Hint: if you can't find a ukulele capo many 5-string banjo capos will work.) Then again, once you've tried it you might like the sound of a D-tuned ukulele and stick with it.
<br />
<br />This DVD is a master class by one of the best that illustrates the potential of a noble instrument. Mastering just a few of the techniques Bob and Ledward Kaapana demonstrate will put your playing above 90% of the ukulele players you are likely to meet.
<br />
<br />And if you come across Tiny Tim on the road, kill him!

Bob Brozman is a walking musical encyclopedia of Hawaiian music and the vintage Hawaiian musical style, whether he's playing ukulele or guitar.
<br />
<br />This is a fantastic video for advanced beginners or intermediate players who want to learn to play ukulele in the Hawaiian style. You should know how to read tabs and music. He covers some very important basics like turnarounds, strums, fingerstyle technique, chord extensions and substitutions, things that you can take away from this video and apply to many other kinds of popular music, but especially to great old Hawaiian songs.
<br />
<br />The only downside to me is that he tunes the ukulele in D in this video, so you'll have to tune yours up from C. That means that your strings will tend to go sharp after you tune them back to C. It's a small price to pay for such a good video, though. If you have more than one ukulele, you might want to keep one tuned in D anyway, it's a nice sound.

Bob Brozman is probably the fastest, best stringed instrument player that ever was.Unfortunately,he is way more of a Jaw-Dropping Show-Off than Teacher. This could only be helpful to a Lifetime Virtuoso with at least 20 years full time experience.

PJ,
I don't know how hard it would be to learn to play the mandolin, but I know from first hand experience the ukulele is a breeze. Especially if you know how to play a guitar. In fact if you can chord a guitar in the second position (above the 5th fret) you can play a ukulele b/c if you put a capo on the fifth fret the first four strings of the guitar are the same as the strings on a ukulele. The only thing difference is the fourth string would be a G below middle C instead of a G above middle C.
Here's some sites with chords and simple songs to help you along.
www.meleukulele.com/PDFs/UkeChart.pdf

Check and see if there's folks or a ukulele club in your area at

Lot's of fun playing with others.
Have fun and let me know how you're doing.

I like Bob Brozman and I have his "Learn to Play Bottleneck Blues Guitar" set but this one is really for advance players. Instead of GCEA, which is the tuning I'm starting to learn, the uke is tuned differently.

Capo the guitar at the fifth fret. If that does not work then one (or both) of the instruments are not tuned to proper pitch.

Well there are a few different ways. For one, you could tune the guitar to the same type tuning - but I wouldn't suggest that. You could also tune the D string (third from the top) a step up to E and the B string (second from the bottom) a half step to C. (EAEGCE) However, either way would be difficult (well more than normal) to play chords on the guitar. I cant think of a place a capo would give a direct match. If you are wanting chords, I would just leave the guitar standard... If you want to play the exact same stuff, I would suggest doing one of the two things at the top. Hopefully, someone will have a better answer and know where to capo it! Good Luck.

You could still play it like a ukulele, but your best option is to take a little investment and buy the Lanikai LU-21.

You could probably find it on eBay as well.

All of the links mentioned above presents to you some of the soprano ukuleles with the best reputation for beginners like you. They are sturdy type of ukuleles, with nice colors. They’ll cost a bit higher than 25 dollars but they’ll surely be worth it.

Anything that cheap is more toy than instrument. The best quality beginner-level ukulele is the Lanikai LU-21, for around $50-60.

Mrunge34,
Yes, take it to a professional. My friend has an electric Kala, Lanikai, and I have the Tenor and soprano Applause. We've never had any distorted sounds from any of them. My pickup went out on my soprano and I took it to the shop. 35 bucks and a week later and it's like new. In fact it sounds even better.
Take it to a shop and see what they say. They may have a better pickup for it.
Have fun,
CowUkeA

Apparently the distorted sound is almost "standard" and people seem to like it. Can only recommend some kind of attenuator to reduce the output.

I asked at a well known and respected guitar shop in the San Francisco area about installing a pickup in my Pono tenor ukulele which is very nice except that it projects sound back to the player poorly. The shop wanted to put in a similar style (stick on, unamplified piezo soundboard transducer) Fishman pickup for $175. That seemed unreasonable for a $300 instrument. So I found this pickup, read the one review, and figured I'd get it and try it out. Worst case if I didn't like it, I could just pull it out and have the Fishman installed and use this transducer on other instruments in emergencies. Well, it was easy to install and the ukulele sounds great when plugged into our Roland AC-90 acoustic amp. I don't feel like I'm missing anything except the brand name recognition. Try it. I bet you'll like it too.

I was skeptical about this little bugger, but I put her in one of my cheaper instruments and I haven't had as much fun playing it. It's very simple to install and has a very nice sound to it. It's a great buy and I am getting more as I write this.

My son was looking at buying a $350 electric uke. He already has 5 ukuleles. I told him to get one of his older ukes and try this out. My husband was wary about drilling a hole. Don't drill in the bottom center, there's a block in there, drill at the bottom side or back. The bottom worked out better.
<br />
<br />We tried it out before attaching anything. There really isn't any instructions and what instructions there is, well you can tell it wasn't made in the US.
<br />
<br />My son loves it and the sound is excellent. I'm so happy because it saved us from buying an electric uke!

It's a Tahitian ukulele to be exact (slightly different to the Hawaiian style ukulele). There's a PDF about the Tahitian ukulele here:

http://files.meetup.com/158468/Tahitian_Ukulele_&_Language_Doc.pdf

And a bunch of video lessons for the Tahitian ukulele here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/kanua8

It looks like a left handed Tahitian ukulele you've got (unless the image is reversed).

kaiti J,
Looks like a cool instrument. Let's see if we can tune it.
There are two common tunings for the uke. GCEA (C tuning) and the Canadian tuning ADF#B (D tuning). The G or (if you choose Canadian tuning) A string is closest to your chin while holding the ukulele.
I'm more familiar with the C tuning so will explain it altho' D tuning is the same.
First, the strings will tune in sets of two.
Let's take the G strings. See if both strings are the same thickness. If they are then both strings will tune to the same pitch. If one string is thicker than the other, then the thinner string will tune an octave higher. The same for the C, E, and A strings.
Here are some sound bites to help you hear the different notes.
http://ukulelehunt.com/2008/04/10/ukulele-tuning-notes/
If you're still have problems try a new set of strings. However, make sure you know what size. Most likely you have a tenor ukulele. You can purchase two four string sets or an eight string set. Check out
http://stores.ebay.com/Musicguymics-Room. He has all kinds of strings. My personall favorite is Aquila.
This is how it should sound when tuned correctly.

Lessons?
Check and see if there's a ukulele club near you and go play along with them. They'll be happy to help you.
But here's some online sites I like.

Interesting looking instrument!

It looks like the 8 strings are actually strung in pairs like a 12-string guitar, am I right? IF that's true, then my first thought was to tune it in fifths like a mandolin (from lowest to highest: GG DD AA EE). OTOH, the fingerboard looks like its a longer scale length than a mandolin, so it might be easier to play if you tuned similarly to the top 4 strings of a guitar (from lowest to highest: DD GG BB EE).

Just Curious,
The first chords you should learn are C, F, & G7. You can play all kinds of songs with just these three chords.
http://www.doctoruke.com/songs.html Access the "BEGINNERS" section and follow along the simple to hard songs he shows. You'll see the chords, where to change, and also be able to listen to the song.
You can find lessons on Youtube.
Prep before you play? Well, tune your ukulele. I know that sounds funny but that's about all the prepping I can help you with.
Some pointers and sites I've used to learn?
Place the thumb of your chord hand at the back of the neck....not the palm of your hand. Use your fingertips on the strings, unless it calls for a bar chord.
When you strum do it like you'd clap your hands. You wouldn't clap your hands on every syllable....would you? NO, you'd clap your hands on the down beat. Just like tapping your foot to the song.
There's all kinds of info at http://ukulelehunt.com/
Chords: http://www.meleukulele.com/PDFs/UkeChart.pdf
http://www.kunisan.jp/ukulele/eindex.html
Check and see if there's a club in your area. You can learn all kinds of stuff playing with others. And it's fun too!

So I needed some music for an office party with a Luau theme (original right?). Well after scouring the internet for hours I finally came upon this album. I listened to the samples available and was very pleased so I bought and downloaded the entire album.
<br />
<br />After playing it at our party I got some very good responses. It really does set the mood for a relaxing Luau. The tracks are instrumental and the overall flow is very nice.
<br />
<br />If you are into the Hawaiian sound, or are (like me) looking for party music this album is perfect.
<br />
<br />A relaxing 5/5

CannedUs,
Pretty cute kid.
The cheapest ukulele I can find that is halfway decent is an EMUS from Empire Music in Canada for about $25 w/o gig bag. http://www.empire-music.com/ViewCategory.php?Category=173 It also comes in a variety of colors. Get machine tuners b/c friction tuning pegs are a pain for beginners to tune.
But, if you want a little nicer, sounds really nice, and is still under $100 go for a Lanikai LU=21 or 21C. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation/lanikai-ukuleles?N=100001+202826&Ntk=All&Ntt=ukulele&Nty=1 The 21C is the concert size and will give you a better tone. Check out the reviews and you'll see you get a lot of ukulele for the buck.
Also, many music stores carry Lanikai ukuleles. I said music stores....not guitar stores like Guitar World.
Have fun,

We absolutely love Hawaii and particularly Kauai. So we were married there on the beach at Hanalei. The night of our wedding Iz was playing in the background, and to our delight the videographer used his over the rainbow/wonderful world track for our Wedding video.<p>I throughly recommend this CD to anyone who wants to slip into their own personal Hawaiian dreamworld!

I actually haven't heard this album yet. We just got back from Maui and all I've been able to listen to while we were there and since we've gotten back are 2 other IZ albums: "Facing Future" and his Vegas concert. I'm going to buy Ka Ano'i and give it 5 stars in advance since the other two cd's are so outstanding. By the way, have you heard the one about the 3 ducks...

Ashley K,
I have an Ovation Applause ukulele and really like it. But if I were beginning I'd buy a Lanikai LU-21C. In my opinion I think it's the best for the money. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation?q=ukulele This is a medium size ukulele (concert) with a really nice tone. Also it has gear tuners, like you see on a guitar, and will be easier to tune than friction tuners. I've had one for five years, teach with it, and advise everyone to buy one. And, NO, I'm not a Lanikai rep.
Lessons can be found all over the Internet. Especially Youtube. Learn simple chords, tuning, songs, etc.
Here's a couple sites I recommend also.
http://www.kunisan.jp/ukulele/eindex.html has ukulele tuning (GCEA), chords with finger placement, and you can access the chord and hear how it is supposed to sound.
http://www.doctoruke.com/ has simple instructions, easy beginner songs, and many familiar tunes. Some easy and some not so easy.
The standard tuning for a ukulele is not the first four strings of a guitar. You will find nearly all songs on the web with standard tuning. Here's the best free online tuner I've found. But, I recommend purchasing an electronic tuner....unless you carry a laptop with you. http://www.get-tuned.com/ukulele_tuner.php
Have fun,

I bought an Ovation Ukulele from a yard sale and love it. Mine looks like this.

http://www.squidoo.com/Enjoy_Your_Ukulele

I learned from Youtube.com Just type in "ukulele lessons". My favorite thing to play is "Forgetful Lucy" from 50 First Dates. It is tuned similarly to the first four string of a guitar except that the fourth string is an octave higher. So if you know anything about the guitar the Uke will come easy for you. Have fun.

Leigh,
Buy yourself a Banjolele. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banjo_ukulele
I have two and they're great. Especially when played in our club. Adds a little spice to the regular ukulele sound. I don't have to learn new chords, get adjusted to metal strings, and they sound just like a banjo.
Here's one site that sells them but you can search "banjolele" and find others. Also, check Ebay or Craigslist.
http://www.goldtone.com/products/details/w/instrument/83/Banjolele
Every ukulele player should have one.
Have fun,

Katie,
Being a ukulele enthusiast and music lover I have to wonder why anyone would want to turn an instrument into a birdhouse. Why not an old boot? Finding a ukulele at a garage sale would be rare. You'd find a guitar first. However, the soprano ukulele b/c of size would be your best bet and you can usually find them new at W-mart for about $20. Or if you want a colorful one go to http://www.empire-music.com/. They have real colorful ones for $20.

but why would you want to attract birds? damn things wake me up at 4 a.m. I'm thinking if building a birdhouse to attract owls and hawksto rid my yard of the other birds.

I got the uke bug recently when I had decided to bring my grandmothers early 1920's banjolele home from a storage unit we have a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed playing it tho the tone isn't that great from the 7th fret on, & decided to purchase an inexpensive ukulele to relieve the stress I'm experiencing at my part time job right now. Seeing the deal on Amazon for this model,I decided to splurge on myself.(usually don't do that around the holidays) It arrived today and I went about testing it. I love the tone-very sweet and that sweetness carries all the way up to the 12th fret. The neck has a great feel, and the frets are well done-no rough edges or uneveness. No string buzzes, the nut and bridge also being very well made. And it has dots on the side of the neck as well as on the fretboard...yay!! (Soooo important-I'm one of those dot players-I get lost without em.) Very good tone for such an inexpensive instrument. The finish could be a tad better-no glue shows or anything like that,it's just not a high quality finish, but the whole idea of buying this model was to have something I could take to work without worry-and the better the finish, the more I worry,so that met my qualifications as well. I had to tweak the machine heads a bit-one was too tight, one too loose & was easily remedied with a small blade screwdriver to the screw on the back of each tuner. On the picky side,I was hoping the gig bag would have an accessories compartment & shoulder strap, but I can add those myself or carry my tuner & pick in my backpack. The strings are new,and stretch a lot just like those of a classical guitar. (I also play guitar, mandolin, and lap dulcimer) This would make a great first ukulele for a person of any age,or a take along model for those more experienced but wanting a "what,me worry?" instrument. Looking forward to playing blues,Irish tunes,1920's songs in addition to classical on it. Right now I'm learning Yuletide carols.

I have been teaching ukulele for the last 8 years. I have always wanted my students to have the best uke at the most affordable price. After years of searching for the BEST UKE, at the BEST PRICE and the BEST SOUND, I found Lanikai Ukes. At Bellarmine University, all of my students begin with a Lanikai beginner soprano LU-21 uke. After learning, students buy another Lanikai uke with more professional qualities. You can get my FREE uke booklets I wrote for Lanikai at www.lanikaiukes.com and you will be playing the uke in just minutes. You can view the different ukes too.

Haley,
Go for the Lanikai LU-21 or 21C. The C is a concert and has a more mellow sound. Both under $100 and excellent for starting out.

Work your way up to something more difficult? Once you learn to play one ukulele you can play another. There's nothing difficult about them.....only more expensive!
Have fun,

Kamaka's are the best, but keep in mind that if you need to get it repaired and you don't live in Hawaii-where the Kamaka factory is located-you can't get it fixed. No authorized dealer up on the mainland can repair Kamaka's. Also, if you live in California, Michigan, New York, or Washington you will find Kamaka's.

I own a Kanile'a concert ukulele, and it's pretty good. The finish is nice and the overall look of it is beautiful. Plays well too.

Baritone is too big, and a soprano may be too small for you. I'd go with either a concert or tenor. All of these are played the same way, they just differ in size.

The video does a decent job at showing some beginner basics and also includes some more advanced skills. Ralph Shaw is hard to follow because he is quite boring. I think this video lacks some of the essential ingridients to be a stand-alone teach yourself ukulele video. I learned a number of things from this video and it has been helpful.

I have been enjoying this instructional DVD for a few weeks now. Ralph Shaw is a great teacher and he apparently really enjoys playing and teaching the ukulele. I have more than gotten my money's worth so far. Also consider is next DVD called Essential Strums for the Ukulele.

Not enough video for the nearly $30 I paid for it. I appreciate the eccentric guy's personality, but the instruction was seemingly unrehearsed and not of much value. You can learn a lot more from other websites out there ( I will refrain from naming them here) for free.

I will start by saying that Amazon.com have never let me down with ordering on the net, thanks to the team.
<br />The DVD Complete Ukulele Course to be honest was the first DVD I have bought so didnt have anything to compare it to...but all the same if I can play the ukulele half as well as Ralph Shaw I would be a lucky man. If you want to learn my advise would be let Ralph show you how.

Pretty much any music store that has accoustic guitars will have at least a cheap ukulele. A cheap one will run you about $20. Better quality ukes will go up from there.

Have you considered making your own? I've made a cookie tin banjolele, a cigar box ukulele, and a bunch of cigar box baritone ukuleles.

You can make a nice looking ukulele or banjolele from easily obtainable materials.
* A stick of 1x2x36 inch hardwood (poplar is easy to work with, oak is more durable)
* A cigar box or other wooden box, or small cookie tin for Banjolele
* Tuners
* Strings
* If you want frets you can add fret wire or improvise using wire, zip ties, or toothpicks.

They're easy to make, and sound good. With a couple extra parts (about $5 worth) you can even make it electric!

If you want some help, please join my instrument builders group here: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/homemade_musical_instruments/ ask whatever questions you have, and we'll do our best to answer them.

Oh, you can see some of the instruments I have built here: http://flickr.com/photos/resistzine/sets/72157603324916027/

This is a great collection of songs you don't normally think of when you think ukulele: old country tunes you will imediately recognize, cowboy songs, even some Elvis.
<br />All the chord progressions are easy, and all written in easily accesible keys like C, G and D.
<br />More advanced players would probably find these arangements a little simplistic, but these are perfect for quick learning when you've got a campfire to sit around later tonight.
<br />I have other Jim Beloff books (and one of his Flukes) and he really knows how to arrange a song for the uke.
<br />I highly recomend this book!

The selection is limited to "classic country" which is one of my favorite genres of music, so I'm biased. But, you wouldn't be buying this if you weren't biased, I suppose. I guess my point is that you won't find any Reba McEntire or Shania Twain in this book. It's Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline territory, so be expecting that if you buy it.
<br />Some of the chords are a little boring, but country music is often three chords, so what can you do? The chords are always appropriate, though and sound great. "Crying" is especially good, as well as "Tennessee Waltz" and "Crazy."
<br />Also, this is certainly a valuable book for ukulele beginners. Because the chords are often repetitive, they become familiar quickly and ingrain themselves in the mind, thus familiarizing the player with common song structures and basic music theory. Without even knowing it! Ta da!
<br />I've had a lot of fun with this book, and I highly recommend it.

The Ukulele is a fun instrument to learn and play
and there are many groups
you can join in many communities.
Before you buy one decide which
Uke you wish to be playing.
There are 4 recognized sizes in the Uke world,
they are from smallest to largest:
Soprano,Concert,Tenor,Baritone
The smaller 3 standard tuning is A E C G
from high to low. The Baritone is tuned like
the first 4 strings of guitars:E B G D

Many guitar players find the Baritone easy to
learn since they already know chords on the
guitar that are even easier to play in
the Baritone. In many only two fingers
are needed since only 4 strings are
available

If you have access to a guitar place a capo
on the 5th fret of the guitar and you convert
the guitar into the soprano Ukulele
(No play on string 5 & 6)

Like guitars - a solid-top uke will cost you
a bit more than a laminated top instrument.
In my opinion the additional cost - like in
guitars -is worth it.
There are good playable-no toys-
Ukes starting around $100.
I have a Baritone with a solid
spruce top (made in Bulgaria) that
cost $85 but that was 2 years ago

Do not waste any money on the very low
cost instruments (below $50)They sound like
the glorified toys they are and many of them
seldom keep in tune.
Good laminated-top Ukuleles are
Lanakai (Hohner Co) and Hilo
Many of my friends in our Ukulele
group play them.

There are many books published for Ukulele
songs and 90% are geared to the smaller
soprano with finger charts showing the
chords to use with the name of the chord.

If you have a Baritone either use the fingering
for the chord guitar style or copy the fingering shown
No big deal you just be playing (in the Baritone)
4 tones lower than the soprano.
It will be like a human soprano singing a duet
with a Baritone singer.
All standard Ukuleles use nylon strings
and players use fingers, not pick to play them.

Hope this will be of help

Ukes sell for about $30 (total junk) up to $5,000 or so for a Martin 5K. The best ukes are made by Martin, Koaloha, and Kamaka. Flea and Fluke make much more affordable but still excellent ukuleles. Elderly has a giant selection here:

http://elderly.com/new_instruments/cats/180N.htm

They also sell instructional books and videos. Good luck.

I found this to be a great introductory book on playing the uke, it starts with how to tune the instrument and goes through an easy progression of cords and songs. I especiaally liked the intro to finger picking, and the glossary of chords. The included cd was quite good and a lot of help. A good buy, well worth the purchase price.

I just got a ukulele for Christmas. This is very helpful and informative. It teaches you how to read Uke music (the up strum / down strum.) There is a Cd that accompanies this book to listen to along with the book. It helps you to know if you are on the right track in your playing. This particular book it's the absolute very beginning. It teaches you how to play the chords correctly (which, I was way off on.) I didn't get frustrated, as I have with other music books. It wants you to play the best you can and correctly.

Although this book has some of Georges famous songs it is not the complete list. There are lots more songs that could have been included which would have put the price up but lots of uke players would have paid the extra....so heres to the 2nd edition
