A Luau celebration can be a lot of fun for a set of adults that want to get together for a festive, tropical-island themed affair. The Luau party makes a good subject for birthday parties. Here are some good luau party ideas including suggestions for games, food, invitations and decorations.
Invitations
Decide first whether you want to buy pre-made invitations or if you want to make your own. If you are using pre-made invitations, be sure to choose designs with bright colors, or large flowers. Some recognizable Hawaiian icons are hula dancers, leis, and palm trees. Personalize the envelopes with a custom designed postage stamp! If you want to get creative, try to find some Hawaiian postcards and mail to your guests and write all of the details of the party on the blank side.
You can also try to bring an image of airline tickets and write on the outside “You’ve just won 2 free tickets!” and fill in the material like this: destination: YOUR HOUSE arrival time: PARTY START TIME departure time: PARTY END TIME.
Another creative idea is to write the party details on a beach ball, deflate the ball, and mail to your guests with instructions to blow up the ball for more details.
You can also attach an index card to lei with party information written on it, and mail the lei to your guests with instructions to wear it to the party!
Decorations
Alternative for decorations at a luau are endless. For an outdoor party, set tiki torches around the party area. It is convenient to get torches that burn citronella oil to keep mosquitoes at bay. Purchase real or silk orchids and hibiscus flowers and scatter them around the locale. Make your own surfboards from Styrofoam board.
Trim tables with grass skirts and place shell candles and coconuts on them. Try to find an old surfboard to use as a table. Be absolutely certain there are enough leis at the party for everyone. Find real, cardboard, or inflatable palm trees. Blow up some beach balls and place them around the room or patio. Whatever it is, think bright and bountiful color!
Games
The first game anybody thinks about at a luau is the limbo. You can procure inflatable limbo sets or real bamboo sets, but it’s simple enough to find a long flat stick or board and two people keen to hold up either end. Crank up the Don Ho and see how low you can go!

Fresh tropical fruit salad with pineapple, mango, papaya and watermelon in a large hollowed out watermelon with be pleasing to the palate as well as the eyes. Haupia, a coconut pudding is a tantalizing sweet treat. Serve tropical drinks out of coconuts halves. Try Mai Tai, Pina Coladas, or a tropical punch with fresh fruit pieces in it.
Cake
The cake can be as simple or magnificent as you like. Bake a round cake and decorate it like a beach ball. You can also try your hand at carving out a cake by baking a rectangular cake and cutting it down to look like a ukulele. Utilize decorators icing to finish the picture. A simple pineapple upside down cake will tantalize your guests. Add a colorful splash with cherries on top.
To go for the wow ingredient, make a “Volcano” cake by making a simple chocolate Bundt cake and carefully placing a piece of dry ice in the middle to simulate the smoke. Mix orange and red food coloring with white icing and drizzle along the sides to look like lava.

Peruvian Music and Instruments

The music of Peru is based on sounds from the musical roots of this ancient Andean country combined with the influences of Spanish colonial period music. There are many varieties of Peruvian music including coastal Peruvian music, traditional music from the highlands, and Peru Negro which is a fusion of traditional and afro-Caribbean themes. There is another type of popular Peruvian music that is called Huayano and is very much like Pre-Columbian music. Coastal Peruvian music has a fusion style while Andean Peruvian music is native to Peru.
Established in 1969, Peru Negro is an Afro-Peruvian style of music designed to celebrate and conserve the black culture and heritage of the Peruvian coast. It gained a reputation as it rescued conventional dance and music and became internationally recognized with the release of the album, “The Soul of Black Peru”, with songs from popular Peru Negro singers. In 2001, Time Square records released the first international recording of the song “Sangre de un Don”. At the time Peru Negro had only twelve members but has since grown to thirty, all of whom are very talented.
The charango is the national instrument of Peru and forms a major part in much Peruvian music. It has five strings and is similar to a mandolin or ukulele. It can have a harp-like quality if it is played as a plucked instrument but can have a stronger and more rhythmic sound if played as a strumming instrument.
Other instruments used in Peruvian music are lutes, guitars, bandurrias, vihuelas, pan pipes, and rattles made from llama toenails! A very simple instrument, very popular along the coast is the “Cajon” which means “box”. It is a rectangular wooden box which has a whole in to emit sound and is simply drummed with the hands while the player sits on it!
The pan pipe is an instrument made up of five or more pipes that increase gradually in size and length, based on the principle of the closed tube, which is a tube that is closed at one end and plays a single frequency. It has long been considered a popular folk instrument and has been determined to be the first mouth organ, predecessor to the pipe organ and harmonica. Materials that make up the pipes of the pipe organ are typically bamboo or giant cane but can also be wood, plastic and metal.
The bandurria is a type of chordophone which is an instrument that makes its sounds by means of vibrating strings between two points. It was used primarily in Spanish folk music and is similar to the mandolin. The modern bandurria has twelve strings which are tuned in pairs and is classified as part of the Hornbostel Sachs set of musical instruments.
The vihuela is a type of guitar or lute derived from fifteenth and sixteenth century Spain, where its “Christian” shape made it gain popularity over the lute derived from Arabia. It typically has six strings and is very comfortable to hold. Some vihuelas do not have octave stringing in the bass but many do and each design works equally as well for its sound which is very resonant and sweet and bright. Known as “chapchas”, the llama toenail rattles are a type of percussion instrument. They are worn on the wrists while playing the drums.
When in Peru you are sure to hear the sounds of pan pipes whilst in the Andes and of course the Amazon has its own styles. In addition to traditional music you will of course hear plenty of salsa, merengue and Latin pop should you choose to sample the nightlife.

How to Choose the Right Banjo

A banjo is a stringed instrument with a rounded body and a long and thin neck. It is often used in bluegrass and country western music genres and has a distinctive style and sound. If you are interested in buying a banjo for yourself, it is important that you have some basic information about this musical instrument before you actually make the purchase. Here are a few pointers that can help you learn more about the banjo and also help you choose the right one for yourself.
Banjo players wear multiple finger picks to pluck the instruments, however, some of them may use their fingers instead. Banjos usually come in four or five strings, although six-string banjos are also available. These six-string banjos can be tuned and played very much like a guitar.
The most popular style of the five-string instrument is the bluegrass style which is played on a banjo with a resonator. It is a style that requires much practice to get the right fluency and tempo, however, it is very good for jamming. The Clawhammer, the frailing, and the old time style banjos are quite similar and are very popular with enthusiasts of old-time and folk music. Often played with an open back banjo, it has a mellow tone and is quite good to sing along. It is also relatively easy to learn. The folk style banjo is played without finger picks and is a mixture of both melody and chord playing. This is often played with a banjo with a long neck and it can be played on both an open back or a resonator banjo. Classical banjo is also played without finger picks and sometimes on a banjo with nylon strings.
A popular style of the four-string banjo is the tenor. It is played with a pick and is usually strummed, giving a jazz sound. It’s tuning is higher and is a good instrument for jazz bands. The Irish tenor, which is similar to the tenor banjo, uses a seventeen fret neck and not the usual nineteen fret neck. This is often used by mandolin players as an alternative instrument. The neck on a plectrum banjo has the small scale of a five-string neck but without the fifth string. It is the least popular of all the styles and uses a G tuning just like the bluegrass banjo.
There are other banjos available such as the banjo mandolin, the bass banjo, the ukulele banjo, and the dobro banjo. The body of these styles is a banjo, however, the neck and tuning is the same as the names of these banjos.
While buying a banjo, make sure that it is easy to play. Check to see if it is easy to push the strings down in front of the nut and also farther up the neck. It should be easy to play with the right hand and you should be able to hear a clear note by just lightly picking a string near the bridge.
If you plan on playing the banjo, you will also need to buy a few other things such as a case to keep the banjo. An electric tuner will be needed to check if the pitch of a string is high or low in tune. If you plan to play styles that use a finger pick, you will need at least two metal finger picks and a plastic or metal thumb pick. An extra set of strings and picks will come in handy in case the one you are using breaks.
So, pick a banjo that sounds fine and can be played easily. The style of music that you intend to play will decide whether you want to go for a four-string, a five-string, or even one of the other alternative banjos. Consider your budget and keep your preferences in mind and you won’t make a mistake while choosing the right banjo.

Nope – the submission must be in the form of a video, but the visual content is entirely up to you. It can be a simple black screen if you wish. Be aware that winners of the grande prize will be chosen by popular vote, so a catchy video can really help, but it’s not required.

We will use guitar tablature so you will not need to read sheet music. You will only use the thinnest strings on the guitar. The string with the highest pitch is called the first string or E-string. Look at the following guitar tab:
1. 0-0-0-0—————–
2. ——–1-1-1-1———
3. —————-2-2-2-2-
This is a tablature staff and the four number 0 indicate that you play the first string four times without pressing down any finger on your right hand. This is called to play on an open string.
The four number 1 coming after is played on the second string pressing down your first finger on the first fret. Then you will play the third string four times pressing down the string on the second fret. This is what the previous guitar tablature notation is telling you.
Let’s play the first notes of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star with guitar tablature:
1. ————0–0————————–
2. ——3–3——-3—-1–1–0–0———-
3. 0–0—————————–2–2–0–
If you want to use your left hand in a professional way you can play the guitar tab notes on the first fret with your first finger, notes on the second fret with your middle finger and the notes on the third fret with your ring finger.
Now it’s only one guitar tablature part left:
1. 3–3–1–1–0–0—–
2. ——————3–
3. ———————
After having played this part twice, go back and play the first guitar tablature part and the melody is complete.
Now when you understand guitar tablature notation you can find many songs written this way on the internet. Search for guitar tab or guitar tablature. A complete guitar tablature staff has six lines representing the six strings.
If you have an ukulele hanging somewhere you can use the previous tablature too. The first three strings on an ukulele is tuned the same way as on the guitar.
